Class Q

Bury Barn

A sensitive conversion of an agricultural barn into a sustainable family home, still on the drawing board and designed to enhance the local landscape and honour rural heritage.

From Barn to Home: A Low-Impact Rural Transformation

Bury Barn is a thoughtful transformation of a former agricultural structure into a low-energy family home that embraces and enhances its rural surroundings. Designed with a light touch, the proposal strengthens the biodiversity of the site through new meadow planting and hedgerows, while retaining and improving public access to the adjacent right of way. A considered material palette draws from the barn’s original use, with contrasting cladding treatments that reflect internal functions. The design adopts a fabric-first approach with high insulation levels, airtight construction, and sustainable technologies such as PV panels and EV charging. Rooted in local research and respect for the land, Burr Barn is an elegant example of rural architecture reimagined for the future.

What is Class Q?

Class Q development refers to a UK planning permission allowance that enables the conversion of agricultural buildings, such as barns, into residential homes. It’s designed to support rural development by making use of existing structures, often allowing for modern, energy-efficient living spaces in countryside settings.
