Question, Test, and Solve

Innovation

We like to shake things up in the design and construction industry, which has often been resistant to change. We don’t just accept the status quo and we love a good, frank debate. We question, test, and solve problems, always aiming for top performance through collaboration. We aim to educate, challenge norms and inspire change and enjoy collaboration with like-minded professionals.

Joined Up Thinking

At Hawkes Architecture, we pride ourselves on a level of joined-up thinking. We challenge and refine every decision throughout the entire design process, from initial concept to project completion and beyond. We carefully integrate renewable technologies tailored to each project’s unique needs, not just for the sake of it. Every building benefits from this thoughtful, detail-driven approach, ensuring smart, sustainable solutions that truly work.

Innovative technologies

At Hawkes Architecture, innovation is grounded in real-world performance. We incorporate technologies such as solar panels, PV-T systems, ground source heat pumps, MVHR systems, and Earth Energy Banks to deliver low-energy, future-ready homes. These systems are not just add-ons, but integrated from the earliest design stages to optimise performance, reduce operational emissions, and support long-term sustainability. By aligning advanced technologies with architectural intent, we create homes that quietly lead the way in environmental innovation.

Site-Specific Strategies

At Hawkes Architecture, innovation begins with the land. Each project responds directly to the unique qualities of its site—whether that means working with steep topography, managing flood risk, or integrating into protected landscapes. Rather than impose form, we let the site inform every decision: how the building is placed, how it’s shaped, how it breathes. From orientation and access to ecology and microclimate, our design strategies are tailored to unlock the full potential of each location, resulting in homes that feel natural, grounded, and entirely of their place.

Passive Design Techniques

Hawkes Architecture has long been at the forefront of energy-efficient design, becoming the first UK practice to complete a certified Passivhaus with our pioneering project, Crossway. This benchmark home set a new standard for airtightness, thermal performance, and low-energy living. Today, many of the core Passivhaus principles—super insulation, airtight detailing, controlled ventilation, and minimal thermal bridging—are embedded across our projects, even when full certification isn’t the goal. By blending these techniques with our contextual design approach, we create homes that are not only architecturally striking but also exceptionally comfortable and energy-efficient year-round.
