A Landscape-Led Passive House Inspired by Coppiced Woodland in Canterbury
This contemporary home is rooted in a strong landscape-led approach, taking inspiration from the nearby coppiced woodland — a defining visual and cultural feature of the site. The design responds thoughtfully to both the immediate context and wider landscape, with an architectural form that balances performance, sustainability, and place. An aligned block reflects the layout and rhythm of neighbouring buildings, while a pivoted block is oriented to optimise solar gain and capture long, framed views of the distinctive woodland beyond. The arrangement creates sheltered garden and arrival spaces, defining a clear domestic curtilage and celebrating the natural textures and patterns of the site. The elevated horizontal wing subtly reveals glimpses of coppiced tree trunks beneath, reinforcing the home’s deep connection to its woodland setting.
Atmosphere
A room with a view
The home’s orientation and carefully positioned openings allow the mid-morning sun to reach deeply into the living spaces, creating a warm, light-filled interior throughout the day. This natural solar access enhances comfort, reduces the need for artificial lighting, and supports the building’s passive environmental strategy. The interplay of sunlight and shadow brings the architecture to life, connecting the interior to the rhythms of the surrounding landscape.

The chosen cladding features corduroy-style boards with lightly processed waney edge fins, allowing the natural character of the chestnut tree’s waney edges to remain a distinctive part of the building’s exterior. This approach balances rustic authenticity with a contemporary sense of order and strong verticality, enhancing the overall aesthetic. To ensure quality, the waney edges will be lightly processed to remove any flaky or untidy bark.
