Paragraph 84 (Para 84)

Greystone

An exceptional Paragraph 84 dwelling in a historic Cotswold quarry, blending sustainable contemporary design with the landscape’s rich stone heritage.

New Build

An Inspirational, Sustainable, Family Home in a Cotswold Quarry

Set within a disused quarry in the Cotswold National Landscape (AONB), this exceptional new Paragraph 84 dwelling tells a life and legacy in stone, celebrating a deep personal and historical connection to our client. The Cotswolds has a long heritage of quarrying, with its locally sourced stone giving buildings a distinctive sense of place. This design draws inspiration from that legacy, using materials and forms that honour the site’s past while embracing a sustainable, contemporary vision for the future.

On 17th October 2024, Tewkesbury Borough Council granted delegated consent for this unique home, recognising its sensitive integration of architecture and landscape.

Inspiration

A Tribute to Cotswolds Heritage

The fundamental design concept of this proposal reflects a desire to create a quarry restoration which utilises the quarry’s form, character and materials to produce a design of exceptional quality which uniquely reflects its quarry location. This broad approach has enabled the proposal to reflect the preponderance of quarries throughout the Cotswolds AONB and the contribution these make to the area’s defining character and its built vernacular.

For this reason, the starting point for the architectural concept for the dwelling is a raw block of stone, which is worked from its raw cleaved outer shell to split, sawn & flailed treatments on deep incisions into the block to carved and polished tactile treatments of stone within the interior.

Thanks to a fantastic team effort by Axiom Planning, DLA Landscape Architecture, Cotswold Natural Stone, a host of other consultants and experts as well as the input and ultimate support from the Gloucestershire Design Panel and officers at Tewkesbury Borough Council that have helped inform this magnificent scheme.

Crafting Sustainable Architectural Beauty

Throughout the design process the shaping of the building’s massing has been informed by the process of quarrying, shaping, and finishing stone. Indeed, this project will be an essay in stone, and a celebration of this beautiful, varied, and low-embodied energy material.
