AN INSPIRATIONAL, SUSTAINABLE, ENERGY EFFICIENT FAMILY HOME
The Cotswold AONB Management Plan recognises that one of the main economic activities that influence the landscape of the AONB is quarrying. Locally quarried Cotswold stone is found in abundance within the local vernacular and can be seen on the neighbouring site and in the Hawling area.
The fundamental design concept of this proposal reflects a desire to create a quarry restoration which utilises the quarry’s form, character and materials to produce a design of exceptional quality which uniquely reflects its quarry location. This broad approach has enabled the proposal to reflect the preponderance of quarries throughout the Cotswolds AONB and the contribution these make to the area’s defining character and its built vernacular.
For this reason, the starting point for the architectural concept for the dwelling is a raw lamp of stone, simply because this is the way in which stone is removed from the quarry.

Throughout the design process the shaping of the building’s massing has been informed by the process of quarrying, shaping, and finishing stone. Indeed, this project will be an essay in stone, and a celebration of this beautiful, varied, and low-embodied energy material.’
