Hawkes Architecture were the UK's most successful Paragraph 55 (Para 55) practice, gaining planning consent for 12 isolated dwellings in the open countryside, before the National Planning Policy framework was introduced in 2018. These innovative, sustainable properties were often designed in highly sensitive areas, including Green Belt, AONBs, Heritage Coast and even a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

What was Paragraph 55?

The term 'Para 55' refers to the aspirational National Planning Policy, first established in 1997, that set out various circumstances that would enable the erection of new isolated dwelling in the open countryside. National Planning Policy Framework, 'Paragraph 79' superseded this unique policy, in a response to improve the quality of new build housing.
