how we work

Hawkes architecture strive to design inspirational sustainable buildings that respond sensitively to the individual needs of every client and every site.

A core focus of this young and passionate practice is the desire to design buildings that minimise their need for energy without costing the Earth.

We are passionate about nurturing a collaborative team ethic where everyone is empowered to add value.  We find that our clients respond well to being closely involved in the design process.  Our inquisitive, questionning approach is always sure to develop inspiring results.

We are renowned for designing buildings of exceptional quality within complex planning sites.  Design quality is held in equal regard to minimising energy use and environmental impact.

Hawkes architecture specialise in designing using the principles developed by the Passiv Haus institute.

Every project is a unique journey.  We strive to make that journey a satisfying and happy one !

Hawkes architecture was established following the success of Richard Hawkes building his own passive house, called Crossway, which appeared on Grand Designs and has subsequently been widely publicised as one of the UK’s first “zero carbon” homes.

Crossway is a sculptural contemporary building creating light and uplifting spaces built from locally produced materials and incorporating various pioneering sustainable techniques and technologies.
