Designing a building to fit in with a typical Kentish farmstead; farmhouse, barn, oast, cottages & Atcost barns was an interesting challenge. We proposed replacing the Atcost barns with a new building which is conceptually conceived as looking like an open hay barn.

The building would provide much needed live / work accommodation to the village whilst maintaining the character & balance of the traditional farmstead. Lined grain silos at the ends would provide large rainwater harvesting vessels whilst also accentuating the agricultural aesthetic.

What's more, our proposal was to build the building from straw bales which would come from the field which the building would overlook.
Holistic, sustainable, cost effective and local - beautiful !
